Together, we have the power to end homelessness
in our community.
The Interfaith Hospitality Network–Main Line (IHN-ML) is committed to helping homeless families in our community to achieve lasting independence. Its goal is to provide safe, temporary housing, meals and support services to homeless families in Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties.
In March, St. Paul’s in Telford has the opportunity to open our doors to a few families who are in transition and need a place to sleep, shower, and eat. Our volunteers will cook and serve meals, play and interact with the children, provide transportation back and forth to the Keystone Opportunity Center, as well as provide emotional support to guests. This is a chance to go on a mission trip without travel.
If you would like to connect with your passion for outreach and take advantage of this opportunity, sign up in the Narthex or email Peter Detweiler (socialministry
stpaulstelford
org) or Pastor Christensen.
Our next Senior Event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 at 2 pm.
The subject is Dealing with Losses – Others’ and Your Own. If you’ve lost a loved one and think you should “just get over it”, or care about others who are grieving, but just don’t know what to say or how to show you care, this event can help you understand the nature of “normal” grief, the ups, the downs, and the duration of the journey and what may be most helpful to those around you who need your support. Our speaker for this event is Elaine Ely, Bereavement Coordinator for Grand View Hospital Hospice. Elaine is a UCC pastor with 16 years’ experience in hospice care, having spent the past 7 years serving our community through GVH.
As usual, we will not be having Senior Events during February due to the very real possibility of inclement weather. Keep warm and rest up for more festive, fun and fabulous events coming next spring.
ACOLYTE SIGN UPS – WILL OCCUR MONTH OF FEBRUARY – During the month of February acolyte sign up sheets will be available Wednesday evenings before and after confirmation and Sunday mornings. The sign up sheets will be in the fellowship hall on a table. We will be scheduling acolytes, nursery helpers and crucifers for the months of April – September 2012. Book club pick for January: Roomby Ema Donoghue. Come January 23rd at 7:00pm in the parlor to discuss this fabulous book!To five year old Jack, Room is the world… It’s where he was born, it’s where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.
Room is home to Jack, but to Ma it’s the prison where she has been held for seven years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in this eleven by eleven foot space. But with Jack’s curiosity building alongside her own desperation, she knows that Room cannot contain either much longer. Room is a tale at once shocking, riveting, exhilarating– a story of unconquerable love in harrowing circumstances, and of the diamond-hard bond between a mother and her child.
Join us in the Fellowship Hall on January 30,2012 for a presentation of ‘Stories from Around the World’ by Bonnie Moyer of Ten-Thousand Villages. This presentation is open to all. October 17th at 7:00 PM in Fellowship Hall – Sarah’s Key by Tatiana De Rosnay
Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally arrested with her family by the French police in the Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup, but not before she locks her younger brother in a cupboard in the family’s apartment, thinking that she will be back within a few hours.Paris, May 2002: On Vel’ d’Hiv’s 60th anniversary, journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black day in France’s past.
Through her contemporary investigation, she stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family secrets that connect her to Sarah. Julia finds herself compelled to retrace the girl’s ordeal, from that terrible term in the Vel d’Hiv’, to the camps, and beyond. As she probes into Sarah’s past, she begins to question her own place in France, and to reevaluate her marriage and her life. Tatiana de Rosnay offers us a brilliantly subtle, compelling portrait of France under occupation and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this painful episode. Don’t miss out on great discussion of this fabulous book.
