Our next Senior Event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 at 2 pm.

The subject is Dealing with Losses – Others’ and Your Own. If you’ve lost a loved one and think you should “just get over it”, or care about others who are grieving, but just don’t know what to say or how to show you care, this event can help you understand the nature of “normal” grief, the ups, the downs, and the duration of the journey and what may be most helpful to those around you who need your support. Our speaker for this event is Elaine Ely, Bereavement Coordinator for Grand View Hospital Hospice. Elaine is a UCC pastor with 16 years’ experience in hospice care, having spent the past 7 years serving our community through GVH.

As usual, we will not be having Senior Events during February due to the very real possibility of inclement weather. Keep warm and rest up for more festive, fun and fabulous events coming next spring.

Book club pick for January: Roomby Ema Donoghue. Come January 23rd at 7:00pm in the parlor to discuss this fabulous book!To five year old Jack, Room is the world… It’s where he was born, it’s where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.

Room is home to Jack, but to Ma it’s the prison where she has been held for seven years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in this eleven by eleven foot space. But with Jack’s curiosity building alongside her own desperation, she knows that Room cannot contain either much longer. Room is a tale at once shocking, riveting, exhilarating– a story of unconquerable love in harrowing circumstances, and of the diamond-hard bond between a mother and her child.
